Day 24: TAG THAT SLUT

Black Sails can't escape sexism. Escape rampant sexism, at that.

So, a question, to my fellow male nerds:
What the fuck is wrong with us?
How much longer are we going to be in denial that there’s a thing called “rape culture” and we ought to do something about it?

And now that motivation has led to six people dead and 13 more injured, in broad daylight, with the killer leaving a 140-page rant and several YouTube videos describing exactly why he did it. No he-said-she-said, no muffled sounds through the dorm ceiling, no “Maybe he has other issues.” The fruits of our culture’s ingrained misogyny laid bare for all to see.
And yet. When this story broke, the initial mainstream coverage only talked about “mental illness,” not misogyny, a line that people are now fervently exhorting us to stick to even after the manifesto’s contents were revealed. Yet another high-profile tech resignation ensued when the co-founder of Rap Genius decided Rodger’s manifesto was a hilarious joke.

The one that makes a wealthy entrepreneur hit his girlfriend 117 times, on camera, for her infidelity, and then after getting off with a misdemeanor charge still put up a blog post casting himself as the victim.

"It’s the same motivation that makes a guy in college stalk a girl, leave her unsolicited gifts and finally when she tells him to quit it makes him leave an angry post about her “shallowness” and “cruelty” on Facebook"

women getting groped at cons, women getting vicious insults flung at them online, women getting stalked by creeps in college and told they should be “flattered.” I’ve heard Elliot Rodger’s voice before. I was expecting his manifesto to be incomprehensible madness—hoping for it to be—but it wasn’t. It’s a standard frustrated angry geeky guy manifesto

But I have known nerdy male stalkers, and, yes, nerdy male rapists. I’ve known situations where I knew something was going on but didn’t say anything—because I didn’t want to stick my neck out, because some vile part of me thought that this kind of thing was “normal,” because, in other words, I was a coward and I had the privilege of ignoring the problem.

But the overall problem is one of a culture where instead of seeing women as, you know, people, protagonists of their own stories just like we are of ours, men are taught that women are things to “earn,” to “win.” That if we try hard enough and persist long enough, we’ll get the girl in the end. Like life is a video game and women, like money and status, are just part of the reward we get for doing well.

"Bitches want respect but expose they whole body like bitch you ain't fannah get no type of respect when you that easy!"

"Girl complains about guys treating her like meat, yet has tits hanging out in every social media media picture."

She decided to do this after a personal experience with harassment sent her over the edge: A stranger on an escalator was touching her hair and calling her "blondie." Um... ew.

"All these half naked 'wife material' pics... nobody wants to wife some bitch up that's posting half naked pics online. Let's be real."

one woman is using the hashtag ‪#‎ShirtlessShamers2016‬ to call out the sexist double standard of men who slut-shame women online. How? By reposting the men's own revealing Twitter pictures, of course.

He was given a 12 month conditional sentence. He also received a $100 fine and was ordered to submit a DNA sample to the national database.

"Sexual assault is traumatizing enough on its own, but survivors are often at loose ends afterward, wondering how they're supposed to return to normal life as if nothing happened."

"So my mother actually cried today because she's worried my "feminist opinions" will stop me from making/keeping friends, getting in relationships and I'll end up alone."

I called a man sexist because of his views on women. He responds with "If i say I like women I'm sure that's sexist to you."

Change tables are mostly in women's bathrooms.

"I mention RPGs, it's assumed I'm a virgin with no girlfriend, and I could never get one. Never mind what the truth is.
The "did your boyfriend bring you" is based on literally decades of girls shunning men and boys who even breathed a mention of role playing games. And that happened 100 times more often than a girl being interested and being kept out.
It's only been in the past 10-15 years that a small fraction of women started enjoying pencil and paper RPGs. Meanwhile, the men who enjoy them have weathered the ridicule for 40+ years.
Don't tell me there isn't sexism against men who play D&D by the greater society.
You have your experience, I have mine.
I respect yours, you should respect mine.
Guess what? I'm sick of being judged by far more people when I mention that I play RPGs. I guess neither of us is going to get what we want."

I reject the concept of virginity, because having sex for the first time doesn’t mean “losing” anything. Why do we consider our first experience with everything else to be a first experience, but with sex for some reason we magically “lose” something? It’s bullshit and it’s straight up slut shaming. We don’t magically become “impure or "corrupted” when we have sex for the first time. Why do we need a separate word for what we are before we have sex?

A Kansas state senator has some people's knickers in a twist after implementing a new dress code that singles out women who wear "skimpy skirts or blouses with plunging necklines," the Topeka Capital-Journal reports.

Guy says sexism in gaming doesn't exist because a woman gave him "stink eye" about being into RPGS when she had been flirting with him a moment before.

Called a post on a game designer's wall sexist. White dude replies to me that there are plenty of women in rpgs and that the post wasn't about me. I'm not sure how it correlates.

Ladies, did you find your own way into D&D and gaming? Were you corrupted by a friend or companion?

I have sexual trauma in my past. I don't like my abdomen or pelvis touched much. It makes me uncomfortable and gives a heavy weight feeling to the area. On Friday I made an active choice to work on the issues in my pelvic area with my therapist. I felt nauseated the entire time with anxiety and my own circular thinking. It was tough. But I feel like I'm trying to get on a path where my mind is healthier.
